Gardaí have described the murder of a man at a caravan park in Co Louth on Tuesday as a "particularly indiscriminate and callous act."

29-year-old Keith Brannigan was shot a number of times as he worked on the decking of a mobile home at the park in the seaside village of Clogherhead shortly before 3.00pm.

Uniformed and armed Gardaí were sent to the scene alongside emergency medical staff

Mr Brannigan was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

"Indiscriminate and callous"

On Wednesday afternoon, Garda Superintendent Andrew Watters said it was lucky no-one else was hurt in the attack.

"This was a particularly indiscriminate and callous act carried out in a very busy caravan park," he said.

"There were a lot of families, women with young children in particular, close to the area of the shooting."

He said a "number of stray shots" caused damage to two cars nearby.

Drogheda Feud

Superintendent Watters said the attack was "not a drive-by shooting" - noting that the gunman arrived in a red Lexus car, got out to carry out the shooting and returned to the car before escaping in the direction of Termonfeckin.

It is believed the killing is linked to the ongoing feud in Drogheda.

The victim is said to be a close associate of a leading gang figure.

Gardaí have logged over 90 incidents relating to the feud to date, including two attempted murders and a number of petrol bomb attacks.

Locals are said to be worried that this apparent escalation will lead to further violence in the community.

Witnesses

Gardaí said the gunman fled the scene in a red Lexus, registration number 05 C 24473, which was later found burnt out on the Thurles Road at Whiteriver.

The suspects are then believed to have then transferred into a second vehicle, a black Toyota Avensis - registration 04 WH 8024 - which was found abandoned in the Clonmore Estate at Ardee.

No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.

An incident room has been set up at Drogheda Garda station.

Gardaí are appealing for any persons who were in the area who may have noticed anything suspicious, or any motorists who may have dashcam footage, to contact Drogheda Garda station on 041-987-4200, the Garda Confidential Line at 18000-666-111 or any Garda station.
