Custom officials in Germany have discovered a package addressed to the Vatican containing 14 condoms filled with cocaine, with the drugs within valued at €40,000.
German newspaper Bild am Sonntag reports this morning that the drugs were discovered in a box at Leipzig international airport in January of this year. The package was set for the main postal centre in the Vatican.
The cocaine, weighing 340 grams, was in liquid form. The German authorities handed the package over to the Vatican police, with the aim of apprehending whoever came to collect it from the Vatican postal centre. So far, however, nobody has come forward to claim it.
Bild am Sonntag reports that German police believe their plan to apprehend the intended recipient was scuppered by a tip off, alerting the recipient that the package had been intercepted.
German police are now working on the investigation with the Vatican Interpol office.
