We may have been deprived of a white Christmas - but it seems the New Year is making up for it. 

Sleet and snow has already begun to fall in some parts of the country today and the cold snap is likely to continue for the coming days. 

However, Met Eireann says although snow may accumulate on high ground - it will probably clear in other areas - but icy patches will persist.
