Fine Gael MEP Colm Markey has announced he has withdrawn his name from the MEP selection convention for Midlands North-West constituency.
In a statement published today, the sitting MEP said, “the most viable path to winning two seats for Fine Gael in the election in June is with two candidates”.
Mr Markey’s withdrawal from the contest leaves fellow MEP Maria Walsh and newcomer Nina Carberry as the likely candidates in the European elections for the Midlands North-West constituency.
Mr Markey wished the remaining candidates “the best of luck” in the campaign and said he is “immensely proud” of the work he has done as MEP.
He took over from MEP Mairead McGuinness three years ago after she became an EU Commissioner.
“In that time, I have worked hard for all my constituents on many matters including agricultural, energy, transport, fisheries, environmental and social issues,” he said.
“I will continue to remain in politics and plan to contest in future elections.
“My focus will return to my home county of Louth and in particular Drogheda which has faced particular challenges in recent months and years.
“I want to play a central role in tackling these issues and working closely with Fergus O’Dowd TD to carry on work he has completed over the last 22 years.”
Former jockey and Dancing with the Stars winner Nina Carberry announced earlier this week she was seeking the Fine Gael nomination for the EU elections.
"Growing up in a family of Fine Gael supporters, lively debates and radio discussions were part of our daily lives,” she said.
“Fine Gael's core value of equality of opportunity resonates deeply with me. As a candidate, I embody this principle."
Sitting MEP and former Rose of Tralee winner Maria Walsh is expected to once again be nominated by the party for the European elections in the Midlands North-West constituency.
