The Garda Commissioner says any move by Gardaí to engage in a "blue flu" is not on.

However Martin Callinan says he has had no indication that any industrial action is in the pipeline.

They have already said any further pay cuts would not be acceptable to them.

The government is seeking cuts in Garda pay as well as overtime, weekend and premium payments.

It comes following the decision to close 100 Garda stations around the country and after 2,000 people protested in the Justice Minister Alan Shatter's own constituency of Stepaside yesterday over the closure of the station there.

Economics Editor with the Irish Independent is Brendan Keenan.

He says Garda vehicles need to be upgraded if stations are closing but that is unlikely to be discussed at the Croke Park talks.

"If we are going to make the Garda more mobile, more responsive because they're not actually sitting somewhere you'd need to look very seriously at that question, and spend money on it" he said.

"But capital budgets never seem to get discussed alongside current budgets; and they're certainly not being discussed at Croke Park, as far as I can see" he added.

While Commissioner Callinan says Gardaí are not in a position to engage in industrial action.
