'Abandoned in her own filth'

Judge Sean O'Donobhain said the evidence was gruesome in relation to how a terminally-ill woman was abandoned in her own filth. He said the picture painted was one of almost mediaeval neglect.

He added that the defence had sought to hold others such as State agencies responsible but that had been rejected by the jury.

The multiple sclerosis sufferer died in Wexford General Hospital on January 7th 2006 less than week after she was removed from the house where she lived with her daughter and her daughter's partner.
