Concept plans for a third terminal at Dublin Airport have been submitted to Fingal County Council.
The plans are from DA Terminal 3 Ltd, a company established by Des and Ulick McEvaddy for the future development of a third terminal at the airport.
The company said the plan sets out "a clear vision for the development of a third terminal at Dublin Airport as part of new Western Campus project, which will become an essential component of transport infrastructure for the future of Irish travel".
The firm added that sustainability and access form "a central element" of the plan.
It would see land situated between the two runways at the airport as the location for a new airport terminal.
A new Western Campus will also see a cargo terminal, hotel, car parking and office space.
Current plans for Dublin Airport are aiming to increase passenger numbers to 40 million by 2030.
DA Terminal 3 Ltd said it is "patently clear that further plans will be required in 2027".
It said its project is a "significant step beyond the short-term thinking" around current passenger numbers and presents a long-term sustainable solution.
The McEvaddy brothers have previously said they were ready to do business with whoever wants to build a 'proper' third terminal at the site.
The plot of over 200 acres has been owned by them for the past 27 years.
The aviation tycoons have put the land on the market with Dublin Airport-operator the DAA the only current bidder.
Last year Ulick McEvaddy suggested that adding to the existing terminals was "a sticking plaster job".
DAA
In a statement the DAA said it wished them well.
"The McEvaddys have sought to sell this land over several decades and are now seeking to develop the lands with these creative 'concepts' of what a third terminal could look like," the company said.
"DAA's focus is on our own infrastructure application which is well developed and based on the practical needs of passengers and airlines.
"We wish the best to the McEvaddys and no doubt there will be a lot to consider for the planning authorities should a planning application be submitted at some future point," it added.
'Short-sighted plans'
A spokesperson for DA Terminal 3 Ltd said the airport needs to deal with what is coming down the line.
"There is a lot of discussion around increasing the passenger cap to 40 million passengers, but this is short-sighted and lacks vision for future needs," they said.
"The fact is that Dublin Airport needs a strategy based on the reality of what is to come.
"We are looking at a masterplan that not only meets the needs of the travelling public, but with the development of the Western Campus, a significant economic hub for Fingal and Dublin.
"The spend anticipated by the DAA for its proposed developments and increasing the capacity by a mere 20% is €2.2 billion.
"For approximately the same spend on a new terminal building, we will double the capacity," they added.
In planning terms, a concept plan is a standard format of pre-application consultant information.
The next stage will be the submission of a pre-planning presentation, which will be followed by a planning application.
DA Terminal 3 Ltd has said it is open to engaging with "all relevant national stakeholders about the optimum planning for the Fingal/Dublin Airport zoned lands".
