Black smoke has billowed from the Sistine Chapel after a fresh ballot of Cardinals this morning who will select the next Pope. This means there has as yet been no agreement on the election of a new Pontiff.

There will be several more rounds of voting throughout the day.

The Cardinals will now retire for lunch before 2 more rounds of voting this afternoon. That will continue for the duration of the conclave until one cardinal secures 77 votes and is elected Pope.

Among those names are likely to be front-runners Angelo Scola of Milan, Odilo Scherer of Brazil and Sean O'Malley of Boston.

The Irish-American Cardinal is favoured by experts surveyed by the Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera.
