Malcolm MacArthur has been released from prison after serving more than 30 years for murder.
He was handed a life sentence in 1982 for killing a nurse in the Phoenix Park in Dublin.
27-year-old Bridie Gargan was attacked with a lump hammer while she was sunbathing on July 22nd that year.
The 66-year-old was approved for temporary release from Shelton Abbey Prison on Monday.
He was transferred from Mountjoy Prison to the open Wicklow facility 9 years ago.
He is to be supervised by the Probation service.
A play entitled ‘The Book of Evidence’ was inspired by the story of MacArthur.
It ran at the Gate Theatre in Dublin back in 2003.
