Project costs have risen from €140 million to "at least" €200 million for a flood defence project in Cork, according to a new investigation.
Over €13 million has been spent on the design and consultation of the Lower Lee Flood Relief Scheme in the past eight years.
The Journal Investigates report shows this is around 80% of the total project spending, meaning the total amount is likely to be close to €17 million.
Construction isn't expected to begin until at least 2027.
Junior Investigative Reporter Conor O'Carroll said the costs have soared.
“It was first proposed in 2013 and, you know, we're still at a stage where we don't have a final design,” he said.
“So, I suppose, as time has gone on, you know, project costs have increased, both in terms of the actual costs of the project, and also, kind of, all the redesigns and all the consultation that has taken part on the project just so far.”
