A 68-year-old taxi driver, who closed his bank account following the financial crash, will appear in court again in November in relation to his appeal against the revoking of his taxi licence.

Willie Wyse of Onslow Gardens in Cork City appeared at Cork District Court today.

Willie Wyse, who remains fully licenced until the decision of his appeal says otherwise, represented himself in court and said he informs each customer that he doesn’t accept card payments and has several signs in his car.

Judge Mary Dorgan said Wille Wyse is “not the man on the street- he’s a taxi driver” and said he is fully entitled not to have a bank account but must obey the regulations related to his role as a taxi driver.

Judge Dorgan said sense must prevail and adjourned the matter for the State to consider the proportionality of revoking a taxi license when there are regulations in place to deal with any breaches.

The matter is due before the court again on the 28th of November.

Judge Dorgan told Mr Wyse that getting a bank account in the meantime would resolve the matter.
