The plans for the new Marina Park include extensive pathways, a wetland play area, boat storage facilities, and redevelopment of the existing Páirc Uí Chaoimh stadium at the site.
Plan of the proposed Marina Park
How the area currently looks
It will be divided into four thematic zones of Accessibility, Activity, Ecology, and Culture, containing their own subzones such as plans for the Active area to include food and drink facilities and a sports Centre of Excellence.
Cork City Council hope focusing its previous commitments on cultural activities in Marina Park will make it the “place to be”.
The development will also protect existing structures such as Heronry Island birdlife reserve and a castle, which currently requires immediate repairs.
Measures to prevent flooding in the park are also outlined, a phenomenon Cork has become all too familiar with.
The draft plans for the park are available online here (very large PDF), and the public are invited to view them in person next Wednesday in City Hall between 4 and 8PM.
