Latest figures have shown an increase in the number of COVID-19 outbreaks and clusters linked to schools and childcare facilities.

Provisional data from the HPSC shows 25 outbreaks related to schools last week - compared to 12 the previous week.

However, health officials say these are outbreaks associated with school children or staff, and they do not necessarily mean there has been transmission within a school.

Childcare facilities saw 15 outbreaks, up from just three the previous week.

Private households remain by far the largest source of outbreaks, with 352 reported last week (down from 395 the previous week).

Meanwhile, there were eight outbreaks and a total of 44 cases among the Irish Traveller community last week.

There were no outbreaks reported among other vulnerable populations, which includes direct provision centres, homeless facilities and prisons.

HPSC data also shows there was one outbreak associated with a meat processing facility, and five within the construction industry.

A total of 23 outbreaks were linked with workplaces last week.

The details come as the Department of Health tonight confirmed 1,095 new coronavirus cases in the Republic - the largest daily number to date.
