An insolvent cosmetic surgery company being sued by 158 Irish women over faulty breast implants looks set to be wound up by the High Court. Dozens of customers of the Harley Medical Group (Ireland) have been trying to stop a liquidator from being appointed here over concerns it would adversely affect their claims.

The firm is seeking the appointment of a liquidator on grounds that it is insolvent. The company ceased trading in Ireland last Autumn.

It is argued the Irish courts lack jurisdiction to wind up the company because its centre of main interest is the Virgin Islands.

In March, one of the solicitors for the approximately 1,000 women who had industrial grade silicone placed in their bodies said it was time for the government to compensate the victims of the PIP breast implant scandal.

However the court has ruled today that it has the jurisdiction to make a winding up order.

Solicitor Simon McGarr represents around 20 of the women who received PIP implants made from industrial grade silicone.
