The cost of groceries is still on the rise - with the price of some nearly doubling in the past two years.

A survey carried out by the Irish Independent shows that many household staples now cost nearly 9 per cent more than 2011 - up from 209 euro to 227 euro.

Biscuits, rashers, dogfood and breakfast cereal all saw the biggest increase of between 30 and 40 per cent.

For example, a packet of Denny Traditional six-pack rashers rose from €2.29 to €2.99 – a 31 per cent increase; while Denny Gold Medal sausage were up 19 per cent from €1.55 to €1.86.

A box of Shredded Wheat has risen from €2.99 to €3.85 – a hike of 29 per cent; while Flahavans Progress Oatlets were up 15 per cent and Kellogg's Cornflakes were up 11 per cent.

Out of the 53 products checked by the newspaper, 20 stayed the same and only 5 dropped in price.

IBEC's Retail Ireland director Stephen Lynam told the Irish Independent that branded products accounted for only 50 per cent of grocery sales, meaning this survey did not reflect the whole story on food prices.

The Central Statistics Office inflation figures showed much more modest increases, he said.

But some products actually decreased in price, such as Cushelle toilet paper, which saw a 16 per cent drop, Johnson's baby powder, down 12 per cent, and Cesar petfood down 7 per cent.
