Reports in The Irish Independent today revealed how some parents shopping habits could lead to their child becoming obese, and specifically what breakfast cereals they buy.
Dietician Claire Kerins said that some breakfast choices were directly related to childhood obesity and that the numbers of those becoming obese were rising at an extremely fast rate.
“Sugary cereals are among the worst mistakes parents make. They don’t check that the cereals are high in fibre. The sugar can be forgiven as long as the fibre content is high.
“I would prefer someone eating Cheerios or Shredded Wheat than Rice Krispies or Coco Pops. Children eating the low-fibre cereals won’t feel full as long and so will be snacking.”
Kerins also discussed the importance of reading nutrition labels on food and that simple choices like buying low-fat milk instead of full-fat could lead to a much healthier breakfast for your child.
