Votes in the Seanad referendum remain tight this afternoon. With over 20 official results in, just over half of the country have voted to keep the Upper House.

But an official result will not be known until later this afternoon.

Based on those figures, it seems the Seanad will be retained but around half of the official results have yet to come in.

Most constituencies recorded very tight votes: in Tipperary-South, which voted Yes, just 187 votes separated the Yes and No vote there. And it was a similar story in Limerick County.

However a strong No vote is expected overall in Dublin and that will be difficult to overcome.

Final results are expected later this afternoon and then attention will turn to the referendum on the Court of Appeal.

Senator David Norris says the Seanad will pass a reform Bill and keep sending it to the Dáil. He says the government should have given the people the choice of reform.

Fianna Fáil TD and the party Director of Elections for the campaign, Niall Collins, says he is encouraged by the results so far.

He says the failure of the Taoiseach Enda Kenny to take part in a debate on the Seanad played a big part in the larger-than-expected no vote.
