A court has heard how a taxi driver was beaten with a glass bottle during an alleged assault in Dublin over the weekend.

Two people appeared in court today charged in connection with the incident.

The victim (32) was rushed to hospital after being hit in the back of the head with a glass bottle at Charleston Road in Ranelagh at 5:20am on Saturday morning.

He also suffered injuries to his arms, hands and body after being kneed, punched and bitten in what gardai believe was a dispute over a fare.

Gary Crowley of Oakley Road in Ranelagh and Sarah Fitzgerald of Sycamore Lawn, Castleknock appeared in court today charged with assault causing harm.

The court heard how Crowley (27) was arrested near the scene a short time afterwards. Detective Garda James O'Donnell said he was covered in blood.

He made no reply after he was charged but Fitzgerald (22) said she was sorry for what happened to the taxi man.

Crowley was refused bail because of the seriousness of the charge and the evidence gathered by gardai, while his co-accused was remanded bail until September.
