The Central Criminal Court has heard a Dublin woman on trial for murdering her husband told gardai that he got what was coming to him.

48-year-old Paul Byrne was found with more than 60 stab wounds at his home in Pairc Gleann Trasna, Aylesbury in Tallaght in Dublin on September 4th 2009.

Tanya Doyle admits that she alone carried out the killing but denies it was murder. The issue in the trial will be her mental state at the time of the stabbing.

Opening the case for the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Bernard Condon, SC told the jury that Paul Byrne was an engineer who had married Tanya Doyle in 2001.

The couple separated a few years later but Ms. Doyle would still come to stay at the family home in Tallaght.

At around 7pm on the night of his death, Paul Byrne dialled 999 for assistance. In the throes of being killed he begged for his life and told emergency services his wife was stabbing him.

The jury is likely to hear the phone call which lasted just over 8 minutes.

Gardai arrived to 'scene of horror'

When Gardai arrived at the house they were met with a 'scene of horror' in the bedroom, said Mr. Condon.

Paul Byrne was in 'a very serious condition', there was a 'knife protruding' and 'it was beyond hope' he said. When asked by detectives what had happened, the court heard there will be evidence Tanya Doyle responded 'he got what was coming to him'.

She is also alleged to have said 'I meant to kill him..I wasn't going to be done for attempted murder. I wanted a fresh start with decent money. He wouldn't sign the house over'.

She was arrested and interviewed 6 times. In a subsequent interview, she is alleged to have told gardai that she did not stab her husband more than twice and that she did not mean for him to have died.

The jury will hear medical evidence relating to her state of mind at the time.

The trial resumes before Mr. Justice Garrett Sheehan tomorrow.
