The issue of who pays what in terms of legal costs arising from Nikita Hand’s successful lawsuit against Conor McGregor will be dealt with by the High Court today.
After the DPP decided not to bring criminal charges against Mr McGregor due to what it described as “insufficient evidence” and the lack of a reasonable prospect of conviction, Ms Hand decided to sue the MMA fighter in the civil courts.
Ms Hand won her case last month and was awarded damages against Mr McGregor, after telling a jury how he raped her in the penthouse suite of the Beacon hotel.
Before a jury last month, she gave distressing details of how he raped her after pinning her on the bed and choking her three times.
She won her case against McGregor and was awarded just under €250k; but she lost her lawsuit against his friend, James Lawrence.
In general, costs follow the event in civil litigation, which means the loser pays.
Ms Hand may end up paying more in legal costs than what she will receive in damages.
However, the judge does have some discretion when it comes to costs and the court will sit again today to hear submissions on who should pay what.
