According to the latest HSE figures, there are 638 patients with COVID-19 being treated in hospitals today.

It's a drop of 47 since yesterday, but still 4% higher than last Tuesday.

The number of patients in ICU, meanwhile, has risen to 130.

It's an increase of four from yesterday's figure of 126, and is 14% higher than last week.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan said: “We know that the level of worry has increased to levels last seen in April this year.

"We know what we are asking people to do to help suppress the spread of disease in our communities is very difficult. If we all make a concerted effort it can make a difference.

"Our research tells us that people are listening to the public health advice and are reducing the number of people they are planning to meet, and are cancelling social events, to reduce their contacts."

The latest Department of Health research suggested people now want more restrictions to address the surge in COVID cases.

Meanwhile, data released today shows every county has a 14-day incidence rate of COVID-19 of over 1,000 per 100,000 people.

The national rate has risen to 1,266, with Westmeath the highest at 1,792.

That's closely followed by Louth and Carlow.

Wicklow has the lowest rate in Ireland, at 1,004 per 100,000.
