Creche owners' body welcomes new childcare rules

Early Childhood Ireland, the body that represents creche owners and workers has welcomed the announcement that minimum qualifications will now be needed to work in the sector.

The body says it has long-campaigned for the introduction of such standards.

New checks and balances will be introduced for anyone looking to open a creche after Childrens' minister Frances Fitzgerald confirmed the new rules last night.

As part of that, anyone opening a new creche will have to pass a HSE investigation before being allowed to open their unit.

Child to adult ratios will remain the same, but will be reinforced.

Frances Fitzgerald told the Joint Committee on Health and Children yesterday that the Government is actively working to strengthen the national inspection system of childcare facilities in response to the recent television expose which has led to a Garda investigation.

Minister Fitzgerald says she wants to make sure the services are of a high quality.

All creche inspection reports will be published online in the future.
