More than 500 passengers and crew have been evacuated from a cruise ship after it caught fire in the Caribbean.

Police say smoke was spotted aboard the 'Caribbean Fantasy' ferry as it travelled near Puerto Rico's north coast.

Puerto Rican authorities have said that the ferry passengers were evacuated safety and no injuries have been reported.

State and federal emergency services are currently in the area, and photos taken by helicopter pilots have captured the extend of the blaze:

As of yet, it is unclear what caused the fire.
