Newstalk's Simon Tierney, host of the Shopping Trolley Hotline on The Hard Shoulder, said buying in bulk can save you money.

"In my experience the major market leaders' offerings tend to be rather bland and watery," he said.

"My advice is to pay a little more for a craft beer.

"More and more of the indie labels are now offering an alcohol-free option.

"For example, Wicklow Wolf's Moonlight ale is hoppy and flavoursome.

"Value for money is an interesting concept in this area because we feel we shouldn't be paying as much for non-alcoholic as for alcoholic beverages.

"But the process of making these drinks is more troublesome than the original in many ways.

"Often it involves a controlled fermentation process or even dealcoholisation, so you can imagine the reason for the cost when this is taken on board.

"The best way to make savings is to buy in bulk rather than single cans or bottles," he added.
