A man has been seriously injured in a hit-and-run in County Louth.

The man in his 40s was cycling his bike near Whitehouse Cross when he was hit by a vehicle that failed to remain at the scene.

He was brought to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda where he is being treated for serious injuries.

The driver of the vehicle has yet to come forward and Gardaí are now appealing for witnesses to the collision.

They are particularly interested in talking to road users who may have dash-cam footage from the area between 6.15pm to 6.45pm last night or were travelling on the Old Dublin Road between Castlebellingham and Dundalk at the time.

The scene remains closed pending a technical examination and local diversions are in place.
