The Dáil will debate a Bill on autism today. It provides for a national autism strategy which would ensure a unified standard of care and raise awareness about the condition.
If passed it will set out how future governments will meet the needs of children and families affected by the condition. It will also ensure that the infrastructure to allow people with autism reach their full potential is put in place.
Every year around 600 Irish children are born with autism which affects their communication skills and ability to form relationships.
Labour TD for Cork South-West is Michael McCarthy. He decided to bring the Bill forward because of what he says is a lack of action here.
