The Dáil has been told that the public are slowly being poisoned by the public water supply. Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley says people can suffer major health concerns by swallowing fluoride in their water.
He has tabled a Bill which would end fluoridation which has been in place in Ireland for over 50 years. It is added to public water to fight tooth decay but it has been claimed that it is now used to make the public more submissive.
The party claims that the chemical is dangerous at high doses and that people get enough fluoride from modern toothpastes.
There is to be an official review of the use of fluoride in our water. The Department of Health said it wants to look at whether it is safe to keep adding the chemical to the supply.
Aisling Fitzgibbon from The Girl Against Fluoride campaign says the chemical carries many risks.
"Risks to thyroid health and to arthritis-like symptoms, skeletal problems, dental sclerosis and recently there's been epidemiological studies shoeing there's been a lowering of IQ in certain fluoride areas which have elevated levels of fluoride" she said.
While Sinn Fein's Brian Stanley says the government cannot ignore the growing health concerns around the practice.
But the Junior Health Minister Alex White says there is no scientific evidence to fear the chemical.
