Daniel O’Donnell has spoken of his desire to appear on Coronation Street.

The 61-year-old has long been a fan of the ITV soap opera that deals with the ups and downs of life in a working class community in the north of England.

Mr O’Donnell said he would jump at the chance of a cameo role but feels he might have missed his chance.

“I’ve always said that,” he told The Pat Kenny Show. “I don’t know now.

“I used to think, ‘What could I do if I went on?’

“I was saying to them maybe I’d have an affair with Mavis and Mavis is long gone from the street.

“Maybe I could sing for Hilda and Stan but they’re gone.”

How Lucky I Must Be

Despite his acting aspirations, Mr O’Donnell remains busy producing music and last week released his new album How Lucky I Must Be.

The Donegal man has had an album in the charts every year since 1988 - something he describes as “amazing really”.

“I made my first record in February 1983, over 40-years-ago. I could never have thought that things could work [out] the way they did,” he said.

“That I would be so long and so lucky and have so much enjoyment out of it for all the years.”

Mr O’Donnell sometimes produces two albums a year but feels relaxed about competition from other musicians who want to match his output.

“I’ve recorded endlessly and that’s why I suppose I’m able to have all these chart albums down through the years,” he said.

“So, I don’t think it’ll be replicated; somebody asked me in an interview not so long ago, was I worried about somebody breaking my record?

“I said, ‘In 35 years I’ll be 96 and I won’t give a hoot.’”

Fame and fans

The title of the album is very much something Mr O'Donnell feels about his career and he spoke with great affection about his many devoted fans.

“I never tried to be anything more than I was,” he said.

“I’ve been lucky with the loyalty of the people who follow what I did.

“I was lucky that what I like, a lot of people like too.

“I’m aware that everybody has different tastes and everybody’s not going to like everything that I do but there was enough people that enjoyed it that allowed me to have a great career.”

Tour dates for Mr O’Donnell’s new album How Lucky I Must Be can be found on his website.
