Shoppers at IKEA in Toronto were taken aback to see a rhesus macaque monkey dressed in a sheepskin jacket and nappy roaming at his own free will for 30 minutes.
Darwin, who is five months old, was placed into the care of Toronto’s animal services department after being spotted in the car park of the furniture store on Sunday.
Yesterday saw the baby monkey being transferred to Story Book Farm in Sunderland, Ontario.
Darwin’s owners will not be prosecuted but were fined $240 Canadian Dollars (€187) for owning the unwarranted animal.
Programme manager for Toronto Animal Services, Mary Lou Leiher said Darwin originated from Montreal and his previous owners bought him when he was one and a half months old.
Ms. Leiher wanted to point out that monkeys can carry a type of herpes which is known to be dangerous to mankind.
The primate sanctuary houses 22 monkeys along with Darwin.
Viral photos of Darwin have spread across the social media world.
