Pablo Escobar may have been killed by police in 1993, but his legend lives on through movies, music and... hippos!

The notorious drug lord, once ranked as one of the world's richest men, kept a number of them as pets on his 'Hacienda Nápoles' estate. After his death, many of the various animals on the estate were moved to zoos, but no one wanted the hippos and so they were left to their own devices. Though African in origin, the Colombian climate proved ideal, and they began to grow in number.

PRI reports that there are now over 60 hippos in the area, and that they have begun to encroach on lands and waters around the nearby town of Puerto Triunfo. Though there have been no casualties as of yet, local farmers and fisherman are wary of their new neighbours, with hippos responsible for killing more humans annually than any other large animal in Africa.

According to Colombian reporter Hernando Alvarez, high maintenance costs prevent anyone adopting the animals, meaning a cull may be the only remaining option. "Some people see that as the only solution before it gets completely out of control.”
