Four months after being a celebrated lawyer – and unexpected sex symbol – after appearing on the Netflix documentary series Making a Murderer, Wisconsin defence attorney Dean Strang is set to star in his own TV series; in Road to Justice, the lawyer will tour the United States, pointing out legal mistakes and how the law has failed the course of justice.
Having worked as an attorney for decades, writing books, teaching law students, Strang rose to international prominence as half of the softly-spoken legal team that put up a defence that convinced most viewers of Steven Avery’s innocence, but which could not win over men and women on the jury of the court in Calumet County.
Now the lawyer, who has already appeared on a number of chat shows discussing his role in the case and Making a Murderer, will star in and act as executive producer on Dean Strang: Road to Justice, a series of eight one-hour episodes. The show will see Strang explain to viewers a number of landmark legal cases that expose the flaws in the US criminal justice system.
Along with his co-counsel Jerry Butling, Strang’s earnest pathos and undeniable skill as a defence attorney turned him into an internationally renowned lawyer following the success of the Netflix show last December. With Strang and Butlin now on a 26-city speaking tour of the US, it should come as no surprise that Hollywood is now hoping to capitalise on the success of the show’s (for want of a better term) breakout stars.
Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey remain in prison, having been convicted of the murder of photographer Teresa Halbach. Both men continue to deny any involvement in her murder.
Avery’s new lawyer, Kathleen Zellner, has claimed that her legal team has promised to exonerate Avery and uncover the real killer in the brutal crime – and that her investigations have thrown up a significant lead.
“I’d say there’s one, leading the pack by a lot,” she recently said. “But I don’t want to scare him off, I don’t want him to run.”
