Death toll rises as Gaza conflict continued overnight

Heavy airfire continued into Gaza last night with a number of deaths and casualties recorded.

It brings the Palestinian death toll to 155 while so far 4 Israelis have lost their lives.

According to Israeli sources the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) military campaign in Gaza is set to continue today in full today.

Israeli says it succeeded in taking a number of Hamas militants in a succession of surgical strikes that went on throughout the night.

In the meantime US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in Jerusalem for talks aimed at agreeing a lasting ceasefire.

However any hope of this happening soon have been dashed by both sides unwillingness to back down with innocent civilians in Gaza and parts of Israel set suffer.

"Crucial" Egyptian role

Last night a Hamas official said that an Egyptian-brokered truce would take effect from 10pm.

However a spokesman for the Israeli Prime Minister described the announcement as premature.

Mrs. Clinton will later travel to Egypt after holding talks in Jerusalem last night.

She says Egypt has a vital role to play in helping to restore calm to the region.

"We appreciate President Morsi"s personal leadership, and Egypt"s efforts thus far" she said.

"As a regional leader and neighbour, Egypt has the opportunity and responsibility to continue playing a crucial and constructive role in this process" she added.

She held talks late into the night with the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu:
