The Taoiseach Enda Kenny has announced that the Referendum to abolish the Seanad will take place this Autumn.
Under the 32nd Amendment to the Constitution, the Seanad will cease to exist from midnight on the day before the Dáil first meets after the next General Election.
It will leave Dáil Éireann and the Presidency as the sole institutions of the Oireachtas - and all functions of the Seanad will be passed to the Dáil.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny says the Seanad is out-dated and it does not represent modern Ireland.
