The new Health Minister Leo Varadkar has announced details of a ban on the use of sunbeds by under-18s.
The restrictions will come in from next Monday.
They to the use of sunbeds on commercial premises by those aged under-18 and will be enforced by the HSE Environmental Health Service.
Skin cancer is the fastest growing cancer in Ireland with more than 850 new cases of melanoma reported in Ireland each year.
The new law will ban the use of sunbeds - in a sunbed premises - by persons under 18 years of age. It will be against the law to sell or hire a sunbed to anyone under 18 and the new law forces sunbed operators to make clear all the dangers of sunbed use.
Minister Varadkar says the measure is essential in order to protect children’s health and wellbeing:
It follows years of campaigning by the Irish Cancer Society, which says those have used a sunbed increase the risk of melanoma by 15%.
