The Archbishop of Dublin has publicly stated his intention to vote No in the marriage referendum.
Speaking in an address to the All Hallows College, Diarmuid Martin said he doesn't usually make public his voting intentions but felt compelled to do so to clear up any confusion on the issue.
According to the Irish Independent, he said a pluralist society should find a way to respect the rights of same-sex couples, while at the same time respecting the uniqueness of heterosexual relationships.
He said the the proposed change to Article 41 of the constitution is not simply about extending marriage rights - it changes the definition of marriage.
Martin also criticised the attitude of many politicians towards the No side, saying they responded to concerns about the amendment with "broken gramophone-like quick soundbites."
