A court has seen the revolver used in the shooting of a man on a farm in Dublin in 2022.
Diarmuid Phelan, who is a Professor of Law at Trinity College Dublin, denies murdering Keith Conlon, claiming he was shot accidentally in a legitimate act of self-defence.
When he arrived at the farm on the afternoon of February 22nd, 2022, Sergeant Simon Whelan said Keith Conlon was being treated while lying on his back.
He said he noticed a Smith & Wesson revolver on the ground.
A previous garda witness said Diarmuid Phelan threw the gun on the ground after confirming to him that he was the one who shot Mr Conlon.
Sergeant Whelan said three of the gun’s eight rounds had been fired.
He told paramedics they were “hollow nosed rounds,” which cause more damage than pointed bullets, he explained to the jury.
He said Mr Phelan told him the three rounds fired were possibly “crowshot” - for shooting crows and rats.
Sergeant Whelan said when he remarked that it was unusual to load a gun with two different types of ammunition, Mr Phelan went silent and did not answer.
