TDs will vote on Wednesday on whether Ireland should recognise a full Palestinian state.

Sinn Féin has tabled the motion for debate on Tuesday and Wednesday, with a vote on Wednesday night.

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams TD, who has recently returned from a visit to the Middle East, said the Dáil “can play a constructive role in promoting peace and supporting a two state solution by passing the Sinn Féin motion to recognise the state of Palestine.”

Sinn Féin are calling on the government to “officially recognise the State of Palestine on the basis of the 1967 borders as established in UN resolutions,” Adams said.

"The government must do all it can to advance an inclusive and viable peace process, and two-state solution, to bring about the positive conditions to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” he added.

The motion would not be binding, but follows a similar motion which was passed unanimously in the Seanad in October. In that vote 31 of the 60 members of the upper house signed a motion put forward by Senator Averil Power.

Last month the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Charlie Flanagan, said Ireland might recognise a Palestinian state if it helped to advance the peace process in the Middle East.

Currently eight EU states recognise Palestine as a state, with Sweden the most recent to adopt the stance and the first to do so while an EU member state.

There is widespread recognition of Palestine as a state across Asia, Africa and South America, but far less within the EU and North America.
