In the episode, a young boy requests a gluten-free meal, and is met with mocking comments from other characters. When a pancake is thrown at him, the boy screams “Gluten!” in terror.
While the scene is presented in a clearly comical manner, it has nonetheless been met with controversy. Disney has pulled the episode off air after it premiered early online last week. The company also issued an apology on Facebook.
Introducing an online petition to get the Disney to stop showing characters getting bullied because of gluten intolerances, parent Amy Raslevich said “for my kids, this is real. They have had friends make fun of their food, been disinvited to parties because of their diet. They have watched others, sometimes strangers and sometimes not, act as if their requests are somehow just a trend, just a request of an overanxious parent or a spoiled and coddled child."
While acknowledging that Celiac Disease is a common and serious condition that is often met with misunderstanding, other writers have pointed out the scene is simply making fun of 'picky' dieters who follow gluten-free ‘fad’ diets without needing to. Recent research found that 29% of Americans try to avoid gluten compared to the 1 in 133 people suffering from Celiac Disease. Time point out that “many of us paying a premium to avoid gluten are doing so without any legitimate medical reason.”
