Newstalk documentary ‘Write to Read’ tells the heart warming story of children in a Darndale literacy project
Write to Read is a Newstalk documentary, about a dramatically effective literacy project that was run in a school in Darndale, in Dublin.
Write to Read, written and directed by successful novelist and scriptwriter Brian Gallagher, and edited by Orla Rogers, tells a heartening story about a group of children who started off far below the national average in reading ability, but who blossomed as readers and people under the Write to Read literacy programme, devised by Dr Eithne Kennedy, of St. Patrick’s College, Dublin.
Using music, interviews and live classroom recordings, facilitated by principal Breda Murray, the story is told from a variety of viewpoints, and features the colourful and uninhibited views of the children of Our Lady Immaculate school in Darndale.
Also featured are parents, the programme organiser, Dr Eithne Kennedy, school principals Breda Murray and Derry Amphlett, and other experts in the fields of literacy/education, such as Liz Powell, Literature Officer with the Arts Council, Mary Hennessey, librarian, Mary Collins, home-school liaison teacher, and Ivan O’Brien, Managing Director of O’Brien Press.
By turns touching and enlightening, Write to Read makes for gripping, accessible radio.
