A mother and her partner have been arrested after her 11-month-old girl was mauled to death by a dog in Blackburn.

Police were called by paramedics to the house on Emily Street, which is understood to belong to the 26-year-old partner of the baby's mother.

He and the 20-year-old mother are currently in police custody being questioned on suspicion of child neglect.

Detective Superintendent Simon Giles, of Lancashire Police, said: "This is a tragic incident, and specially trained officers are offering support to the wider family and full investigation is underway."

The relationship between the baby and those arrested has not been confirmed. It is believed the girl was not at her home address at the time of the incident.

Nobody else was injured during the attack.
