Former US President Donald Trump is set to play a round of golf, and discuss an expansion of his hotel in Co Clare, before departing later.

Mr Trump flew into Shannon Airport on Wednesday following a visit to Scotland.

It is his first trip to Ireland since 2019 and the town of Doonbeg has been packed out with Gardaí and US security personnel.

In preparation for his visit, the Trump International Golf Links & Hotel Doonbeg was also thoroughly cleaned and festooned with American flags.

Jack Horgan Jones, political reporter for The Irish Times, told Newstalk Breakfast this is a very low-key affair.

"He's due to fly out of Shannon later on, and before that the only thing I think that is set in stone in his schedule is a game of golf," he said.

"The sun is not shining for him this morning, and indeed the forecast is not great.

"My understanding is that he was due to meet last night with a group of Doonbeg locals, who are in favour of storm reinforcements being put on the beach.

"He came in quite late, so I'm not sure if that happend.

"He's due to meet with local hotel management - he's brought his son Eric with him, who manages a lot of the hotel investments here and in Scotland.

"They're due to sit down with the local management and talk about the development and extension of the hotel".

'Irish Trump fans'

Mr Jones said the town itself has been relatively quiet.

"Hanging around Doonbeg yesterday... you were much more likely to bump into journalists than you were to bump into Trump fans," he said.

"When it comes to the hotel and the resort itself, there was more of a concentrated show of support.

"There were Irish Trump fans, there were also a scattering of North American tourists - many of whom were pro-Trump.

"It's interesting as well that all the local dignitaries, the local TDs and anyone from Government, stayed a million miles away from this," he added.

Mr Trump has been charged with 34 felonies pertaining to the 2016 US Presidential Election.

He denies all charges and has announced his intention to stand against Joe Biden in 2024.
