A Dongeal man who has motor neurone disease says he feels guilty that his local GAA club is being punished for helping him.

Naomh Colmcille's in Newtowncunningham allowed one of their pitches to be used for a charity soccer tournament in aid of Paul Dillon.

The club had requested permission from Donegal GAA, but was refused as non-Gaelic games are not permitted on club grounds.

Recent media reports indicated the club had received an eight-week ban from all adult competitions and a €500 euro fine.

In a statement yesterday, the Donegal County Board said the club isn't currently suspended - but added that findings of an investigation 'recommended suspension for eight weeks'.

It said the club is entitled to due process, and will have the right "to prove these findings incorrect or misapplied".

'Common sense'

Paul Dillon said he was "very shocked" when he heard the news of the proposed suspension and felt guilty about it.

Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast, he said: "The lads were only trying to do a wee charity thing - they helped me through my illness.

"I think the county board should see a little bit of sense on this, and just have this ban overturned. It's not the club's fault - it was just a bunch of lads getting together."

Paul said he understands that rules are rules, but "common sense" should be seen in this case.

He suggested many people in his village and the county have been 'taken aback' by the findings.

Speaking about his condition, Paul explained that he received the "devastating" diagnosis in January.

However, he said his recent move from crutches to a wheelchair has been "amazing" - noting that it's given him more control in terms of "getting out and about".
