Carlow Weather’s Alan O’Reilly has said that areas of high ground will see the worst weather.

“A cold morning with some icy stretches, and also a risk of some sleet and snow showers, especially in high ground where there could be some lined snow for a time this morning,” he said.

Fallen wires and trees

In Galway, cleanup crews will be out again this morning to assess the damage caused by the storm.

Galway City Council spokesperson Ailish Rohan warned the public to stay away from fallen electricity wires and downed trees.

“We just ask the public to please, please be patient, as we had almost 250 calls in,” she said.

“We were monitoring them through the night, and we categorised them yesterday as well into high priority and that the major routes were cleared.

“We would ask people please do not try to remove trees or dangerous items like electrical wires, because there’s a significant risk that the wires may be live.”

In Mayo, the multi-million Connacht GAA Air Dome in Bekan near Ballyhaunis has been destroyed.

Former Mayo senior football player Conor Mortimer has said the loss of the facility will be felt across the community.

“It draws business into the town, the shops; I know there’s a pub there and food and stuff like that,” he said.

“I’d imagine there’s a very big sigh of shock and disappointment over the fact that this fantastic facility that’s been very, very successful since it was built is no longer there.

“These projects, they don’t happen overnight - there’s a lot of planning; there’s a lot of trying to get the funds together to get these sorts of domes.”

Meanwhile, ESB has said around 540,000 customers remain without power, while some 250,000 homes and businesses in Northern Ireland are also without electricity.

ESB has warned that it could take a number of days before power is fully restored.

Uisce Éireann has said that more than 130,000 people are without water and the company last night warned that supplies for a further 750,000 people were at risk.
