One of the key figures of the sixties revolution joined Chris and Ivan in studio yesterday. Folk legend Donovan rose to fame after his first song Sunshine Superman went straight to no. 1 in 1966.
An over night success, Donovan went on to release 30 studio albums. His latest album Shadows of Blue was recorded in Nashville last year after he received the honor of a place in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Donovan told Breakfast how his father was a Bohemian and used to read poetry to him as a child.
"The Bohemian in the late 40s and 50s would be into social change, unions and songs of freedom. That was instilled into me in many ways.
"But the father teaching poetry, I realized that in a folk song you could be a hero and in a song of social change you could be a voice."
In 1968 Donovan went to India with The Beatles and spent 6 weeks there. They met the Maharishi and practiced transcendental meditation. According to Donovan, they had three acoustic guitars between them and he taught them how to finger pluck and play folk music.
The Beatles went on to write their famed White Album and Paul McCartney is quoted to have said it had Donovan all over it.
