European Commissioner Phil Hogan doesn't appear to understand how angry people are about the golfing event in Galway, according to a Government minister.

Darragh O'Brien has backed calls for the Commissioner to resign.

Mr Hogan yesterday offered a "fulsome and profound apology" for attending the dinner, but he stopped short of resigning.

It has since emerged he briefly stopped in Kildare, which is under lockdown, while travelling to the event in Galway, and was stopped by a garda for using his mobile phone while driving.

Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast, Minister O'Brien said Mr Hogan needs to be "absolutely clear" about his whereabouts and actions before last week's event.

He said: "The drip-feed of information is less than helpful.

"I still don't think he understands how angry people are about this.

"He shouldn't have attended, he showed really poor judgement at the very least to attend the event.

"The first apology really was a non-apology. When the Taoiseach and Tánaiste pressed him further there was a more fulsome one... but then we get details of... [a] stop-off in Kildare. We don't know the full details of it."

'No-one should be above the law'

Minister O'Brien said the Taoiseach and Tánaiste have been clear where they stand, and he also believes Mr Hogan should also still consider his position.

He noted it is up to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, as the Irish Government does not have the power to 'hire or fire' Commissioners.

However, he said: "At this stage, the saga is dragging on... it's damaging.

"[Mr Hogan has] been a good Commissioner, there's no question about that - but no-one should be above the law.

"My colleague Dara Calleary acted honourably and very swiftly... others have lost the party whip. It appears to a lot of people that the only person who appears to be above taking any responsibility for this appears to be EU Commissioner Hogan."

The Housing Minister acknowledged trade is a 'really important portfolio' at the European Commission, especially with further Brexit negotiations on the horizon.

However, he insisted that EU negotiators have served Irish interests well during negotiations to date - and "that will not change" as the trade talks with the UK continue.
