Emmerdale and Doctor Who star Richard Franklin has passed away.
According to a statement released by his family, the 87-year-old died peacefully “in his sleep” on Christmas morning after battling a long-term illness.
Mr Franklin was a renowned theatre actor and political activist up until his death.
Statement from Richard’s family:
“Richard sadly died in his sleep after fighting long term illness. We are deeply saddened by his loss, we will fondly remember him for his generosity, creative spirit and fantastic story telling.’

His family said he would be remembered for his generosity.
“Richard sadly died in his sleep after fighting long-term illness,” they said.
“We are deeply saddened by his loss, we will fondly remember him for his generosity, creative spirit and fantastic storytelling.
“He is also well remembered outside the family for his long-running career in TV and Theatre where he delighted audiences of all ages.
“This gave him great joy and we know his legacy will last.”
Mr Franklin first appeared as Mike Yates in Doctor Who in 1971.
He would become synonymous with the role and reprise it on a number of occasions over the coming decades.
Mr Franklin has also contested four general elections in the UK from 1997 to 2005 through four different political parties.
