The Road Safety Authority is urging motorists travelling home this evening after the Easter break to take extra care on the roads.

The death of a pensioner in Co. Kerry last night brings to 50 the total number of people killed on Irish roads so far this year.

68-year-old Declan Lowney of Knockeendubh, Tralee Road, Killarney was cycling in the direction of Killarney when he was hit by a mini-bus near Kilcummin Cross at around 9.45pm.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Road Safety Authority says driver fatigue can result in fatal accidents after a bank holiday weekend.

It is appealing to road-users to be aware of the dangers of driver fatigue.

Research indicates that one in every five crashes on Irish roads could be caused by driver fatigue.

The RSA is urging road users to be aware of the warning signs of driver fatigue, know the risks and keep yourself and your family safe.
