Drivers have been warned to take care on the roads from this evening with icy conditions forecast around the country.
A yellow ice warning will be in place from this evening in Counties Antrim, Armagh, Down, Tyrone and Derry.
On Thursday, the warning will be extended to all other counties except Fermanagh, Dublin, Wexford and Waterford, with ice and temperatures as low as -3°C expected.
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is warning drivers that the ice will make for “hazardous conditions” on the roads and is urging drivers to check local traffic reports before setting out on any journey.
The RSA recommends drivers:
· Clear their car's windows and mirrors.
· Slow down in icy conditions and allow extra distance between vehicles.
· Take extra care around vulnerable road users - such as pedestrians or cyclists.
For pedestrians, the RSA suggests:
· Wear proper footwear and walk on a footpath if possible.
· Never underestimate how dangerous ice can be and use "extreme caution" when out and about.
The RSA's advice to cyclists is to:
· Pedal cautiously and break ahead of corners.
· Stay extra alert and remember stopping distances increase in bad weather.
