Is a Dry January among your New Year's resolutions?
As the dust settles on the festive season, many will consider cutting back on alcohol for January.
Drinkaware, Ireland's charity for tackling alcohol misuse, said Dry January is a "timely opportunity to reset drinking habits and enjoy a fresh start".
The charity has put together a number of tips to help those taking part in the month-long challenge to stay on track.
Set clear goals
Drinkaware encourages participants to write down their goals for Dry January. A number of common goals associated with the challenge include improved health, saving money and feeling more energised.
Reimagine socialising
Fill your calendar with alcohol-free social events, such as cinema trips, coffee dates or walks with friends.
Challenge yourself
Drinkaware advises Dry January participants to step out of the comfort zone and enjoy social events - such as gigs or comedy nights - without drinking alcohol.
Don't be hard on yourself
Treat every alcohol-free day as a success, and if you slip up, don't be discouraged.
Consider alcohol-free options
There are a huge range of alcohol-free beverages available, including mocktails, 0.0 beers and alcohol-free wines.
Make it a lifestyle
If you enjoy Dry January, consider adopting some of the habits once the month is over.
Drinkaware suggest reducing your overall alcohol intake or keeping certain days alcohol-free.
The charity's CEO Dearbhla O'Brien said Dry January is a "valuable opportunity for adults to redefine their relationship with alcohol, improve their physical and mental health, and build long-lasting habits for the year ahead."
"We know that the first month of the year can be difficult for some people, which is why Drinkaware offers practical resources and support to help participants stay on track," Ms O'Brien said.
"As always, our priority is to reduce the harm caused by alcohol misuse, particularly when it comes to the risks of drink driving."
According to Drinkaware's 2024 Barometer, 37% of adults want to drink alcohol less often.
