New security screening technology to scrap liquid restrictions will not be fully rolled-out at Dublin Airport until the end of next year.

Some 30 new C3 machines are needed across the two terminals in order to fully lift the liquid restrictions.

It had originally been hoped installation in Terminal 2 would be completed by the end of March with Terminal 1 following soon after.

Authorities have been testing the enhanced x-ray technology at the airport since 2022, which would mean passengers could bring whatever liquids they require without restriction on bottle size, as long as they are stored within cabin baggage.

Similar machines are already being used at Shannon, Ireland West, Kerry and Donegal Airports.

Cork is also being upgraded to install the new scanners.

Dublin Airport operator DAA expects Terminal 2 will be complete by October of this year, with work in Terminal 1 not set to finish until October 2025.

Dublin Airport update

DAA Media Relations Manager Graeme McQueen said the roll-out will have to slow down over the next few months.

"Terminal 2 is going to carry on right through the summer; we're not going to pause it," he said.

"We've got nine in there at the moment so we're not far off the 15.

"Terminal 1 will pause for the summer - June, July and August - there'll be no installations happening then.

"That's just to get the volumes through that we're expecting".

Mr McQueen said high passenger numbers are expected for the summer.

"We're going to have a lot of days [of] between 100,000 and 120,000 passengers in those months," he said.

"So the priority is getting passengers through and on their holidays".

Mr McQueen said the current timeframe should see liquid restrictions fully lifted by next October.

"By the end of May we'll be about half way there which is really good," he said.

"T2 will be finished by October this year so really, really good progress being made there.

"T1 will take a bit longer; it's an older building, we do need to do some reinforcement works to make sure that they can take those big heavy machines.

"So we're looking at an October 2025 finish in Terminal 1," he added.

The DAA has previously said it is a "complex process" as there are over 30 x-ray machines across Dublin's two terminals.

The project involved the purchase of new state-of-the-art equipment, as well as the completion of works within the terminal building itself.

The liquids rule has been in place since 2006 to help guard against terrorism.
